YEAH

I made it through Wednesday! Now to only finish out the week with our conference. We'll be going full force until we hit the office on Saturday night. Hopefully we'll be able to pull this off without any snags.

I've had a pretty eventful week. I went out on Tuesday night and had dinner at PF Changs with a friend. Nice restaurant, but the conversation was much more memorable than the food. Walter was so silly - he told me my curfew was 10 p.m. I made it home by then, and what did he want, but me to pick him up a chicken sandwich from Wendy's.

This evening has been something...I'm finally getting the packing done for the trip and I even managed to slip in packing four boxes of books for the move next Saturday. I've been so busy with everything I really haven't gotten all the stuff ready to move that I need to. I really do need to make a stop at the liquor store or have someone to do it for me so I can get some boxes. It may look like I'm an alcoholic moving into the new place, but the boxes are sturdy.

SUPPORT

I know it is early, but if we all show our support now, by November we should have everything sorted out.

There are less than eight months until the election, an election that will decide the next President of the United States. The person elected will be the President of all Americans, not just Democrats or Republicans.

To show our solidarity as Americans, let's all get together and show each other our support for the candidate of our choice. Its time that we all came together, Democrats and Republicans alike.

If you support the policies and character of John McCain, please drive with your headlights on during the day.

If you support Obama or Hillary, please drive with your headlights off at night.

Thank you.

My Mother's Day

Although the day has been cool and rainy, I have had a pleasant day, although rainy day. Walter took me out for a Mother's Day lunch to Texas de Brazil. Yum. I thought there for a little while that he was going to slip off in to a meat induced coma. When I left him a little while ago I do believe he was headed to take a nap.

I snapped this little guy sitting on the Walter's deck - he has that look of "What?" Which pretty much sums up the way the afternoon has been going.

I've been spending the afternoon curled up on the sofa, reading. Since I haven't taken the time to go out and get a new television yet. It has been the perfect weather for it.

No Enemies

All women should live so long as to be this kind of old lady!

Toward the end of Sunday service, the Minister asked, 'How many of you have forgiven your enemies?'

80% held up their hands.

The Minister then repeated his question.

All responded this time, except one small elderly lady.

'Mrs. Neely?'; 'Are you not willing to forgive your enemies?'

I don't have any.' She replied, smiling sweetly.

'Mrs. Neely, that is very unusual. How old are you?'

'Ninety-eight.' she replied.

'Oh, Mrs. Neely, would you please come down in front & tell us all how a person can live ninety-eight years & not have an enemy in the world?'

The little sweetheart of a lady tottered down the aisle, faced the congregation, and said:

'I outlived the bitches.'

Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens

I took Mom out for a girls day today. We started off the morning by leaving out early to go to Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens. I picked up Mom a year pass so that she can go back anytime that she wants.

This cardinal was an elusive fellow. We chased him or one of his brothers all the way through the garden. We finally caught up with him and had the dickens of a time actually getting a photo. He kept hiding in the tree.

This Canadian goose was sitting on her nest. We would have missed her totally if she hadn't moved her head when I was sitting on the bench beside her. We took off back around the pond to get a better angle on her and when we got around to the front side of her she stayed nicely posed for us the entire time.

The pitcher plants were on a little island in the middle of the pond. There were hundreds of them. There were a few that I tried taking laying on the pathway. The final flowers of the day were water lillies. This one came out really well. I like the way that it reflects on the water.

Then we were off to Olive Garden for lunch followed by an afternoon of pampering - manicures, pedicures and eyebrow shapings. Fun stuff. Especially the massaging pedicure chairs. Relaxing!

After I got back home, I have been hanging out at Walter's house. Since I'm without at television I've been watching Indiana Jones movies with him this evening. I got a real surprise when some purple finches showed up on the deck railing at Walt's apartment. Here are a couple of the shots that I was able to get through the sliding glass door.

"I Didn't Marry This Job, I'm Just Dating It"
...The Value of Discretionary Effort

By Bill Catlette and Richard Hadden

My 33-year-old son recently remarked, "People no longer marry their jobs - they just date them." Having worked for virtually every casual-themed restaurant chain in America, he speaks from experience. When his comment finished sinking in, I realized two things; 1) He's right, and 2) That statement is pretty profound.

Not long ago, Economist.com ran a piece summarizing a European Union survey of the average job tenure of workers in each of 17 countries throughout Europe and North America. The average job span ranged from four years in the U.S. to 13 years in Greece. Even with the less-than-stellar odds that come with wedding vows, four years is still probably closer to dating territory than marriage, right? Score one for the kids.

When one considers the amount of fooling around that occurs early in a relationship (work or personal), and the absolute dysfunction that exists in the breakup stage, there isn't a lot of productive time in the middle. So, in the workplace, managers are faced with about a three-year window that is largely devoid of loyalty, commitment and - but for occasional outbreaks - passion. We're just dating!

It should be no surprise, then, that in one "engagement" study after another (e.g., Tower Perrin, Gallup), people are shown to be operating with the 'ole effort meter at something well shy of "balls to the wall." More specifically, most people are, by their own admission, contributing only 60-70 percent of their maximum effort to their job. But here's where it gets interesting; most folks allow that, under the right circumstances, they could and would contribute more effort...a lot more. In other words, inside each of us there is a wellspring of effort - discretionary effort (we call it, "Oomph") - just waiting to get out. Sadly, too much of it goes home at day's end, unspent.

There are many ways managers can tap into this discretionary effort, which is one of the greatest natural (and free) sources of competitive advantage. On the premise that the default position for Oomph for most people is "on," one of the smartest things we manager-types can do is to avoid turning the spigot off. Some thoughts:

Work needs to matter

When people begin to entertain the question, "What's the point?" their "Oomph" pumps start shutting down. That happens when they begin to question whether their jobs have any real value to anyone - their managers, the organizaino, or most of all, customers.

With alarming regularity, managers assign people to a project, creating the impression that the resultant work will be applied to some important organizational need. Initially, the worker exerts significant discretionary effort, proudly presenting the finished product to the manager who requested it. When the product is then relegated to the shelf, never to see the light of day, the worker learns that it's not in his or her best interest to put too much into such requests. "Oomph" off.

Standards are lax

In some organizations, it doesn't seem to matter if the work is done well only that it gets done. People soon adopt the stance that, "If my manager doesn't care whether or not I knock myself out, I certainly don't."

Hardworking people want to work in the company of equally competent, commited and honest individuals. They will pull someone else's weight for a while, especially if there's a good reason, one they understand. But they're loath to bear others' yokes for the duration of the journey. Similarly, whn managers turn a blind eye to dishonest, unethical or unprofessional behavior, there are serious downside implicaitons for discretionary effort. It sends signals you don't want to send, and slows things down by diluting trust.

One of the surest, fastest ways to tank "Oomph" is by lowering your hiring and performance standards.

Jeromy Williams, owner-operator of a Jacksonville, FL Chick-fil-A - company widely known and appreciated for utilizing the discretionary effort of its employees - says, "Everybody goes through three interviews. We don't just hire people off the street. We'll all work twice as hard for as long as we have to until we find the right one."

With a little luck and some hard work, we should be surrounded by people who are eager to do good work, and proud of it when they do. Why is it then that so many of these bright, well-intentioned employees end up losing their "Oomph"? Here's five reasons why...

1. Because managers have the audacity to tell people that they are "empowered" to do their work, yet they place ridiculous limits on their ability to fix problems and satisfy customers. If your people can't unilaterally commit an amount of the company's funds equivalent to a month of their salary or wages to satisfy a customer, stop using the term, "empowered."

2. Because there's a "supervisor" for every six or seven worker bees. Do your people really need that much supervision? Are they that incompetent?

3. Because managers bail their people out constantly, or worse, take over when they see them struggling. "Oh, forget it. I'll just do it myself." Truth be known, everyone needs the benefit of some real live fire practice opportunities. As Mark Twain put it, "A man who carries a cat home by the tail learns ten times as much as one who only watches."

4. Because too often, managers burden folks deemed bright, experienced, and well-intentioned when they're hired with a "To-Do't List" of policies and procedures that cause them to lose any appetite for using their brains. Or, because managers insist on personally reviewing and approving any informatino, recommedations or reports that are destined for points north of them in the food chain.

5. Because entirely too often, managers keep paying those who consistently require the kind of supervisory over-sight spelled out in items 1-4 above.

It's been said that, in the final analysis, you really can't motivate people. While that's an argument best left for another day, one thing is for sure; work gets done a lot better and a lot faster if we don't de-motivate our people in the first place. Good luck and Godspeed. ## From the The Virginia Engineer, May 2008, p. 24-25

Thursday

The day started off pretty well, until Verizon showed up at the office to begin the change over of our phone service. The phone room is a mess and it is requiring a whole lot more to get it working than just flipping a couple of switches. I can hardly wait to get the mess over with....

Play Ball

Bill and Hillary Clinton are at the Yankee season opener sitting in the first box seat row, Secret Service agents directly behind them. One of the Secret Service guys leans forward and whispers something to Bill.

At first, Clinton stares at the guy, looks at Hillary, looks back at the Agent, and then nods his head NO.

The agent then says, "Mr. President, it was at the unanimous request of the entire team, from the owner on down to the bat boy."

Bill hesitates...but begins to change his mind when the agent tells him that the fans would love it!
Bill shrugs his shoulders and says, "Okay, if that's what the people want." With that, Bill gets up, grabs Hillary by her collar and the seat of her pants, lifts her up, and tosses her right over the low box seat fence sprawling head over heels onto the field.

She gets up kicking, swearing, screaming "I'll kill you! You @ #$!&&&&&&&&*%$%**!!!..

The crowd goes absolutely wild; fans are jumping up & down, cheering, hooting & hollering, and high-fiving.

Bill is bowing, smiling and waving to the crowd. He leans over to the agent and says, "How about that, I would never have believed how much everyone would enjoy that!" Noticing his agent has gone totally pale, Bill asks him, "What's wrong?".

The agent replies, "Mr. President, I said they wanted you to throw out the first "Pitch".

Fair Tax

At a business conference in Montpelier, Vermont, the state tax commissioner asked the audience which sort of taxation they found fairest.

There was a pause, and then a white-haired man in the back raised his hand. "The poll tax," he said.

"But the poll tax was repealed," replied the commissioner.

"I know," declared the man, "that's what I like about it."

A Long Walk

In a remote village in Central America the word got out among the peoples of the region that one of the American missionaries that had served this country for many years was about to return to the US to live our the remaining years of her life.

The nationals desired to honor her for her years of service with a public time of appreciation. News of the event went to all parts of the country in which the missionary was known to the people. One very old and very poor man walked to the ceremony over mountainous terrain for 4 days to bring his gift to the missionary.

The gift consisted of 2 coconuts, but it was all the man had. The missionary recognized the man as coming from the remote village in the mountains.

"Brother, I cannot believe that you would walk so far to present me with this gift," said the missionary to the man.

His response? "Long walk part of gift."

Graveside Observation

A newly widowed man stood at the cemetery next to his wife's casket. When the graveside service had no more than terminated, there was a tremendous burst of thunder accompanied by a distant lightning bolt and more rumbling thunder.

The little old man looked at the pastor and calmly said, "Well, she's there."

Tail Whacker

A woman was working in her yard with the weed whacker, when she accidentally cut off the tail of her cat.

She ran screaming into the house, and told her husband, wondering what to do.

He replied calmly, "Get the cat, and the tail, and we'll take them to Wal-Mart."

She was incredulous. "How could that possibly help?" she asked.

"Well," he replied, "they're the world's largest retailer."

Wednesday

Boy did my morning start off wrong. The boss was not a happy camper this morning and it showed. Everyone did their best to stay out of the way and keep things on a even keel. I do believe that by the end of the day that things had simmered down.

Walter came by the office around 5:45 p.m. to pick me up to head over to Innsbrook for the CCR concert. I surely didn't think that we were going to make it in time, but luck was with us and we only missed part of the opening band. The crowd grew greatly after we arrived, so in the end I didn't feel too bad about arriving as late as we did.

There was one particularly funny sight that I saw that I really couldn't hardly believe, and I will probably laugh about it for years to come. A police officer for the county was using a slim-jim to break into his police cruiser! It was a riot. He spent probably 15-20 minutes working on trying to get into the driver's side door when he must have just gave up on it only to move on to the passenger side door to try it there. One of the older officers must have took pity on him, because he came over and popped that lock right away. Poor thing - the embarrassment. Walter commented that it really instills confidence in law enforcement when they have a hard time getting into their own vehicles!

The concert was FANTASTIC! The little area of the crowd where we were was really into it and it was fun. I even was able to take a few photos other than the officer and even this little video clip. It's not too bad considering it was night, no tripod and the crowd was hopping!

Tuesday

Here it is Tuesday already? Hard to believe that the weekend went by so fast and Monday just screamed by. I did hit the gym after work yesterday. I'm right on schedule thus far.

This evening I didn't get in until nearly 8 p.m., I ran out to Alice's after work for a brief stop and then back on to the house. Just enough time for some dinner and "laundry". The fun never stops, but at least it is done until the first of next week. Then I'll really have to get it all together for the trip to Ohio.

Well tomorrow evening promises to be fun, Walter & I are headed to the Creedence Clearwater Revisited Concert at Innsbrook. Hopefully I'll be leaving work on time so that we're not late. The concert starts at 6:00 p.m. it will be close.

Sunday

What a nice day!

I spent the day just doing normal stuff and kicking around out of town. I did make it to one of the Parade of Home shows there. The place was gorgeous, and only $1.5 million.

I got in around 9 p.m. and was able to get to bed at a decent hour in preparation for the new work week.

Saturday

The trip was fun and I hustled back to make it in time for the Mother-Daughter Tea. As I was sailing through the apartment to get ready - I noticed only as I was leaving that my television and Archos were missing. Now not jumping to conclusions, I thought that Walter for some strange reason may have borrowed them, but that was not to be. Someone had broken into my apartment after Alice had been by and before I had returned.

I just made sure the door was locked and went on to the tea. I made it there on time and had a pleasant time. This is a collage of a few of the photos that I took.

I spent the rest of the afternoon with Chesterfield's finest and one of the techs who came out to check for fingerprints. No such luck finding any. We'll we all can't be as lucky as the CSI techs. Usually there aren't fingerprints but it was worth the shot.

So for lack of anything better to do on my part I headed back out of town for another evening. At least there was company and a television to watch. :)

Friday

Off early this weekend to visit with friends out of town. The trip is going to be fun and I am looking forward to getting out.

Alice is taking care of Carla for me for the evening. I'll be heading back in on Saturday for the Mother-Daughter Tea with Mom.

Thursday

We are still battling the phone companies. It is amazing how messed up something can get when two competing companies get involved. In order to get the matter resolved we had to take it all the way to the State Corporation Commission. Who would have thought? They tell us that the phones will be back today, but who knows for sure?

I hit the gym this evening. Time to get it all together. I'm shooting to make it a least three nights a week. It will help work off some of the stress from work.

REMEMBER ANNIVERSARIES?

A woman awakes during the night to find that her husband was not in their bed.

She puts on her robe and goes downstairs to look for him.

She finds him sitting at the kitchen table with a hot cup of coffee in front of him. He appears to be in deep thought, just staring at the wall.

She watches as he wipes a tear from his eye and takes a sip of his coffee.

"What's the matter, dear?" she whispers as she steps into the room, "Why are you down here at this time of night?"

The husband looks up from his coffee, "I am just remembering when we first met 20 years ago and started dating. You were only 16. Do you remember back then?" he asks solemnly.

The wife is touched to tears, that her husband is so caring, so sensitive. "Yes, I do" she replies.

The husband pauses. The words were not coming easily. "Do you remember when your father caught us in the back seat of my car?"

"Yes, I remember," said the wife, lowering herself into a chair beside him.

The husband continues. "Do you remember when he shoved the shotgun in my face and said, "Either you marry my daughter, or I will send you to jail for 20 years?"

"I remember that, too" she replies softly.

He wipes another tear from his cheek and says... "I would have gotten out today."

Wednesday

Today was outrageous. The phones at the office went down around 11:30 a.m. this morning. Leaving us without any way to get incoming calls. I spend around 4-5 hours on the phone (which we could dial out on) trying to get to the bottom of the problem. Only after I had left for the day, did I get a call telling me what had gone on. It seems that since we are change our phone service to a new provider, the old one has gotten into a snit and just cut our service off prematurely. Tomorrow will be a real adventure getting it back up - which hopefully will be back up before mid-morning.

Just about closing time, Dean called. He had locked his keys in his car and I apparently had the only spare. Which I was in total denial about having - I had to come home and actually look through the spare keys to convince myself that I had it. Even then I wasn't sure that the key I had was his (I thought that it was from Walter's old GEO), but it was and he was 'rescued', and now has possession of that spare.

I had planned on going to the gym this evening with Roz, but with the trip to Sandston and needing to be home at 8 p.m. this evening to monitor a teleconference. The gym lost out, but not to worry, tomorrow is just around the corner.

FBI Job Opening

The FBI had an opening for an assassin. After all the background checks, interviews and testing were done, there were 3 finalists; two men and a woman. For the final test, the FBI agents took one of the men to a large metal door and handed him a gun. "We must know that you will follow your instructions no matter what the circumstances. Inside the room you will find your wife sitting in a chair . . . Kill her!!" The man said, "You can't be serious. I could never shoot my wife." The agent said, "Then you're not the right man for this job. Take your wife and go home."

The second man was given the same instructions. He took the gun and went into the room. All was quiet for about 5 minutes. The man came out with tears in his eyes, "I tried, but I can't kill my wife." The agent said, "You don't have what it takes. Take your wife home."

Finally, it was the woman's turn. She was given the same instructions, to kill her husband. She took the gun and went into the room. Shots were heard, one after another. They heard screaming, crashing, banging on the walls. After a few minutes, all was quiet. The door opened slowly and there stood the woman, wiping the sweat from her brow. "This gun is loaded with blanks" she said. "I had to beat him to death with the chair."

Put Him Back

When my now 14-year-old daughter was 3 and her younger brother was getting into everything, she asked, "Mommy, can we put him back, now?"

Deciding to take this opportunity as a teaching moment in how siblings should treat each other, I explained to her that we could not put him back - that her brother was a gift from God.

She looked up at me with her big blue eyes and responded, "I understand, Mommy. God didn't want him either."

Saturday

Another fine Spring day. Carla has been enjoying having the door open and being able to come and go (at least from house to patio). I've moved Tweat's cage outside for the day. She does seem to enjoy it when I put her outside. Sometimes there is what sounds like conversation going on between her and the other birds in the woods.

A little later this morning I'll be running up to the car to get all the boxes out. It appears that this time when I move it won't just look like I'm some sort of alcoholic (with all the liquor boxes) but maybe some sort of medical supply company as well. Boxes from work are terrific. If I'm very energetic all get the laundry done as well.

The plans for Monday are to go with Roz to Victory Lady and sign up. She and I are going to be working out together on Monday, Wednesday and Thursdays. It will be great for both of us - someone to workout with always is much more fun.

I headed out this afternoon on a mission to get a photoshop book from Books-a-Million only to find that they had nothing that I wanted and was going to have to go to Barnes & Noble any way. Then when I got to the one closest is closing up to move across the street to the mall and had nothing that I was looking for. So I took a slight side trip to visit with Marion & her family. I was able to meet the new granddaughter. She was delightful. I was even able to see all of the kids. It was nice catching up.

I finally was successful at getting the book I was looking for, but then the dreaded "bookstore mania" came over me and I ended up walking out with 6 different books. I could be book poor. It is not a great place for me to hang out. Since I usually come out with more than I ever went in to buy in the first place.

I did also get the opportunity to stop by and visit with Alice for a short time. I think that we had a nice visit.

The rainly has finally made it Richmond. Carla is hiding out now that the thunder has begun.

Lawn Burglars

Brookpark, Ohio: Burglars recently broke in to an unoccupied house that was being renovated for sale. Among the items they stole were roofing shingles, a lawn mower, weed whackers, and lumber.

They broke into a storage area under the deck and also a shed in the back. Before leaving, though, they mowed the lawn of the residence.

Neighbors report seeing strange men walking around the home, but they never called the police because they figured the men were hired to do the lawn.

The owners are quoted as saying they will leave a pressure washer and painting equipment for the thieves next week as they did a better job than the lawn care company they had hired, and they were cheaper also.

Epitath

A doctor wrote about an epitaph he had seen in a local cemetery:

"In memory of my father: gone to join his appendix, his tonsils, his olfactory nerve, a kidney, an eardrum, and a leg prematurely removed by an intern who needed the experience."

An unusal purchase: I went into the gas station today and asked for five dollars worth of gas. The clerk farted and gave me a receipt.

People In Your Life

People come into your life for a reason, a season or a lifetime. When you know which one it is, you will know what to do for that person. When someone is in your life for a REASON, it is usually to meet a need you have expressed. They have come to assist you through a difficulty, to provide you with guidance and support, to aid you physically, emotionally or spiritually. They may seem like a godsend and they are. They are there for the reason you need them to be. Then, without any wrongdoing on your part or at an inconvenient time, this person will say or do something to bring the relationship to an end. Sometimes they die. Sometimes they walk away. Sometimes they act up and force you to take a stand. What we must realize is that our need has been met, our desire fulfilled, their work is done. The prayer you sent up has been answered and now it is time to move on.

Some people come into your life for a SEASON, because your turn has come to share, grow or learn. They bring you an experience of peace or make you laugh. They may teach you something you have never done. They usually give you an unbelievable amount of joy. Believe it, it is real. But only for a season.

LIFETIME relationships teach you lifetime lessons, things you must build upon in order to have a solid emotional foundation. Your job is to accept the lesson,
love the person and put what you have learned to use in all other relationships and areas of your life. It is said that love is blind but friendship is clairvoyant.

Thursday

Walter has finally broken down and called the mover. They are going to come by on Monday to give us an estimate. Hopefully it will not be overly expensive.

I've been a busy bee this evening. I have FINALLY taken down the Christmas tree. Hmm...let's see it's been up since early December and here it is the end of April. I'd have had that darn thing down months ago, but work and Walter have both been keeping me a little busier than I normally would have been.

Carla has been thrilled, in her doggie way, that I've been home this evening. She was able to lay out in the back field for quite a while this evening and is now all curled up in the chair on a couple of throw pillows.

The girls at work are starting to help me out on gathering up boxes for the up coming move. It's time to start packing up what I can.

A Rainy Sunday

The rain has been coming down all day. There even has been bouts of lightening to go with it from time to time. We've needed the rain, but it does make for a long day. I went out to church this morning - dodging a quite a few rain drops in the process. This evening was choir practice, it went well. In between I've been entertaining myself doing some of the regular household chores and working on a project for work at home.

Sean gave me a call today it seems that he and Dean have been spending the last few evenings out fishing at the reservoir. They have been catching a few, but they have either been releasing them or passing them along to other fishermen.

This afternoon and evening my internet connection has been fuzzy. It is annoying when that happens. Consistency would be great.

Simple Saturday

What a wonderful morning to wake up to! The birds are singing and there was even a bit of a breeze. Delightful.

This morning I went out and pampered myself just a little. I had a manicure, pedicure and my eyebrows done. I've even scheduled an appointment for Monday to have my hair done.

I've been playing around this afternoon doing a little work and answering some fun email. I have also discovered that we are currently being invaded by the catepillars that have come out of their nest at the edge of the woods. Catepillars are cute, but when the invasion starts they aren't cute at all they are very annoying.

Friday

Welcome to Friday!

I'm looking forward to a wonderful weekend. I do hope that the nice weather holds out through out so that all of us office rats, have the opportunity to enjoy a bit of sunshine and pleasant weather.

The afternoon was quite pleasant - I enjoyed getting outside for a short while this afternoon. I did end up staying at work much longer than I had wanted to this evening though. But it was for a good cause - Verizon showed up at the office this morning to install the FIOS cabling into the office. This involved burying cable from the street to the back of the building and then fishing the line into the building under the parking lot. It work really well until it came to fishing the line into the building. That little feat of engineering took around 4 hours to accomplish. The cable wouldn't turn the corner and the insulation in the pipe didn't want to get out of the way. Finally at 6:30 everything was in and ready for the installer to show up. Now hopefully that won't take too long for him to get to the office next week.

Once I arrived back home this evening I discovered the the cable is still out...I called yesterday and reported it when I got home and here it is 24 hours later and still out. I reported it for a second time this evening, but Comcast isn't giving me any warm fuzzy feelings about getting it fixed. There isn't a live person to talk with or even a recorded message letting me know if there is a wide spread outage or not. I guess I'll either watch movies this evening or even better yet I'll work on some more of my Italian and see if that can't get moving along a bit more.

Air Boss

Activated from the Army Reserves for a joint service Arctic exercise, I was assigned to the air reconnaissance section.

Although I had recently been promoted, I was feeling rusty, and wanted to get started learning my duties so as not to appear too "green."

I confided to the Air Force lieutenant colonel who greeted me that I was anxious to meet the Air Boss right away.

"Don't worry, son," he said reassuringly, "the Air Boss is a real professional, knows his stuff cold and works well with his people. Great guy."

"Terrific!" I replied. "What's his name?"

Looking through the roster, the welcoming officer replied, "O'Hara."

"Oh, no," I groaned. "That's me."

Marriage Teachings

At the banquet of Tom and Susan's 25th wedding anniversary, Tom was asked to give his friends a brief account of the benefits of a marriage of such long duration. "Tell us, Tom, just what is it you have learned from all those wonderful years with your wife?"

Tom responded, "Well, I've learned that marriage is the best teacher of all. It teaches you loyalty, forbearance, meekness, self-restraint, forgiveness -- and a great many other qualities you wouldn't have needed if you'd stayed single."

"Through the years I've noticed that conscience gets a lot of credit that really belongs to cold feet."

Driver's Test

It was just another day at the DMV. I had taken a woman out on her driving test when a police cruiser came up behind us--sirens wailing, lights flashing.

"Was I speeding?" she asked the officer, after both cars pulled over.

"No," said the officer. "But you are driving a stolen vehicle."

Smiling awkwardly, the woman turned to me. "Does this mean I failed my test?"

Prayer

A Sunday school teacher asked her class, "What is prayer?"

One of her pupils answered, "That's a message sent to God at night and on Sundays, when the rates are lower."

Thursday

The day has been quite full.

Walter and I were talking today about some of the dumb things that were going on in the news. I told him that they were dumb as bricks, but he did chime in to say that even though they are dumb they are "constructive". It was the big laugh of the evening.

Sean called around 9:45 p.m. they had been out checking out the constellations when they saw a shooting star. A really cool sight any time.

I just was going over the calendar for May and it is going to be hopping!

One Hard Question

There was a student who wanted to be admitted to the University.

He was smart enough to get through the written test, a GED, and was to appear for the personal interview. Later, as the interview progressed, the interviewer found this boy to be bright since he could answer all the questions correctly. The interviewer got impatient and decided to corner the boy.

"Tell me your choice," said he to the boy, "What's your choice: I shall either ask you ten easy questions or ONE real difficult. Think well before you make up your mind."

The boy thought for a while and said, "My choice is ONE real difficult question."

"Well, good luck to you, you have made your own choice!" said the man on the opposite side. Tell me: What comes first, Day or Night?"

The boy was jolted first but he waited for a while and said: "It's the DAY, sir."

"How???????" the interviewer shot back, smiling. ("At last, I got you!" he said to himself.)

"Sorry sir, you promised me that you will not ask me a SECOND difficult question!"

The student was admitted to the University.

Tuesday

It has been an interesting day. It was proposed earlier this morning I be cloned. I really did need to be two people today. Even though there have been a couple that I would have been really blessed to have been three people.

I ordered up Walter & I a pair of tickets to see Creedence Clearwater Revisited at Innsbrook on May 7th this evening. That gives us two concerts that we're going to in May. This one will be the first and the BIG ONE is to see The Eagles, on May 21st in Charlottesville, VA at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Walter is pouting this evening - Comcast has dropped the History Channel from the basic cable line up and moved it to a strictly digital channel. So he isn't a very happy camper. I've told him that he can watch all the digital channels, STARZ, HDTV and HBO OnDemand all he wants at my place.
