Sultry Saturday Road Trip

We took a road trip this morning to Colonial Williamsburg. We started out in the visitor's center watching their introductory movie to the Historic area. We started our tour at the Governor's Palace, our guide was very informative and pleasant. We made our way down the Duke of Gloucester Street to King's Arms Tavern for lunch. It was a very pleasant meal. The service was excellent and very relaxed.

Then we headed off back up the street to explore the various shops. We toured the Printing Office and the Post Office. The Printing Office was located next to a stream that runs under the Duke of Gloucester Street. It made the office are a bit cooler than some of the other places.

I do believe that we stopped to do a bit of shopping in each and every shop in the Historic area before heading on to Market Square. The boys having been successful in obtaining the greatly sought after rock candy. Our stop at the Market Square turned out to be a fruitful stop for me as it yielded a summer hat, with peach and beige ribbons - and it matched the outfit I was wearing for the day, and also some lovely scented soaps as well as lavender powder.

We attempted to secure a carriage ride but they were completely booked by the early morning. We did find out that in order to schedule a ride we would probably have to be at the Lumber House Ticket Office by 8:30 on any given morning to secure the carriage. Wow, that is early.

I slipped into the Colonial Garden and was able to find a busy bee on a grand thistle. The size of the thistle blossoms were about the size of woman's fist. The garden also had some exotic fruit trees planted, as well as some sunflowers that were nearly the size of a charger plate, if not larger. The boys saw an extremely large lizard by the fence but I wasn't able to get there fast enough to get a photo.

While the boys were taking a peek into the Harness & Saddlemakers shop and I found a lovely gated garden behind the shop. I found a "painting" that is just waiting for me. The photograph itself is awesome, I only hope that when I am able put brush to canvas I will do it the justice that it deserves. I did get several other photographs of the gated garden but this one just seems to call to me.

The humidty was becoming oppressive as we finally made it all the way to Merchant's Square and into the Barnes & Noble to cool off. While inside it we found that there was an upstairs cafe and a great place to have a seat. It was nice to sit down inside and enjoy an icy cold Raspberry Italian Soda, to over come the sultry weather outside. Much to our surprise while sitting in the cafe a sudden downpour arrived. We thought for awhile there that we were going to look like drown rats just getting from the store to the bus stop, but just as suddenly as it arrived the shower passed.

We headed in the Merchants Square area and found an interesting gallery in one of the upstairs shops. They had quite a number of unique and whimsical items. For the truly pampered they even had silk slippers.

We found that the early evening that we had hung around for was called off due to the rain, but not to be discouraged we made the walk back toward the Governor's Palace.

I stopped off again in the Colonial Garden and was amazed to see several humming birds feeding on the bee balm plants. If you look closely in the shot with the red flowers the humming bird is feeding on the top flower to the right. It was amazing to watch and even more amazing that I was able to capture the image.

The boys wanted to pick up some more rock candy and we continued back up the street, where I met up with a friendly little squirrel, he came down one of the side streets and almost right up to my feet as I was looking for other "painting" to catch my eye. He really was something else. I do believe that he was expecting a snack when he got close enough to me to reach one.

We took an alternative route back to the bus stop to return to the visitor's center, near the Randolph House I came upon this cat sitting upon the fence, looking quite mischievous. He appeared to be posing while I was taking the photograph. In another photo he jumped down from the fence and stat on the bricks just at the gate once again "posing".

My final shot was at a creek behind the Governor's Palace. This was on the path that led back to the bus stop. The horizontially striped reeds were quite interesting. The little stream was crystal clear and appeared so inviting and refreshing, especially after the humid hours that we had been walking around the Historic area.

As we were walking around Duke of Gloucester Street, I remembered an elderly lady that I used to visit in a nursing home near to where we lived (when I was in about the 5th or 6th grade) in the 70's. She was in her late 70's or early 80's at the time and she would tell me all about what is now the Historic area of Williamsburg. Her family lived at the end of Duke of Gloucester Street and she remembered being able to see the capital from near her home. Of course, the things that she told me about were prior to the Colonial Williamsburg foundation taking over the area. I wish I was able to recall all the bits of history that she told me.

I had a really enjoyable morning visiting with Danielle & Faith. Faith rolled over for me and we "talked for a while". She really enjoyed playing with her Snoopy. She giggled and giggled. She began to get a little fussy so we took a walk around the house checking the other baby in the mirrors around the house. We also went outside to sit on the steps, since she loves being outside so much. We watched as a little boy went riding by on his bicycle and a jogger also. We listened to the birds singing and saw a a chipmunk going down the driveway looking for a snack. Once the outdoors weren't entertaining her any further since she was beginning to get tired, we went inside where and she sat snuggled up in my lap until she nodded off to dreamland.

After she woke up, Danielle got her all ready to take to the doctor for a quick look at her ears. It seems that she has been pulling at them and has on occasion cut her ear with her fingernail. I received a phone call from Danielle after I got home - the report on Miss Faith was no trouble with her ears and that her top two teeth are going to be coming in soon. She now weighs in at 14lbs 8oz. Growing like a weed.

I sat out on the deck for a little while this afternoon and enjoyed the great number of visitors to the feeder area. So far I've seen squirrels, mourning doves, cardinals, purple finches, starlings and a few others that I don't know their names. It has been quite a busy area so far today.

Alice and I got together this evening and had a wonderful time talking over coffee/hot chocolate at Panera's. I really enjoyed spending the time with my "baby" sister. On the drive home, the summer evening was evidenced by the sparkling of fireflies over open fields, and of course as soon as I opened the car door the mugginess of a hot Virginia night surrounded me. Praise the Lord for air conditioning.

Thursday

I came across this interesting theory on the three primary reasons why those who struggle with weight do so:
  1. A fear of moving forward in their life, living their purpose.
  2. The extra weight is a protection from a perceived threat or fear.
  3. Food is used as a counterfeit energy to compensate for the emotional and spiritual energies of sweetness, comfort, fulfillment, and satisfaction that are lacking in their lives.
Interesting to contemplate, as well as this little tidbit entitled "All Truth Goes Through Three Stages"
  • First it is ridiculed
  • Then it is violently opposed
  • Finally, it is accepted as self-evident
I'm heading out into the yard this morning and moving some small plants around in the area of the bird feeder. It is my hope that they will continue to grow and provide more color for that area as well and seed for the yellow finchs. Once I got started, I of course, got on a roll and ended up moving three small azaleas that weren't doing to well in the side yard. I think that they were getting too much sun. I put them in between the crepe myrtle bushes. I have seen this arrangement around town and once things get to full size it will look great!

I was right I wasn't outside long based on the level of humidity and the expected high temperature of 95-degrees. I got in before 10 and ended up hopping out to Mom & Dad's to trade some black-eyed susan plants for some, what we call trumpet flowers (although that is not what they are really called).

While Mom & I were walking around in her yard we came across a "June Bug" these are the type of beetles that I remember when I was little tying a string to their leg and letting them fly around. I've been looking around the net to see if this is actually a June bug and haven't found any that look like it - so off the email has gone to our resident biologist to find out what type of beetle it really is....and the answer (7/14) is it looks like a June Bug! to him also, it is definitely in the Order Coleoptera (which are the beetles). Thanks Steve for the answer to the burning question of the day.

I also was able to be blessed with some fresh picked green beans, squash and apples. Thanks Dad!

We received some bad news from Aunt Barbara Jean, Uncle Jimmy's sister passed away this afternoon. All our prayers and sympathy go out to them and all the family. - The Smith's

This evening a number of storms came through the area and really dumped quite a bit of water onto us in a short period of time. I thought that my petunias had been pounded down never to recover. Also it looks like I'm coming down with a bit of laryngitis - but I hope that it doesn't last very long this time. It took three weeks to get over the last bout I had of it. Thinking positively it will only last a couple of days.

Wonderful Wednesday

Mom took this on Walter's birthday, and sent it to me today, as you can see Walter is towering above us all and both of the guys are using me as an armrest. Me with my typical coffee cup and camera. Fun!

Sean all decked out in his 70's outfit for the "Blast From the Past Day" at camp. The outfit reminds me of the "Brady Bunch". I hope that he will have a fantastic day and really enjoy the activities that they have planned for them today.

Miss Cassie arriving for our "Girls Day"... We have lots of things that we want to do: manicure, pedicure, using the hot rollers and such thing. I know that we are going to have a great time.

We have painted our nails a lovely shade of burgandy and added little pink flowers to Cassie's to perk them up. We even painted pink flowers on her big toes!

After lunch we are going to watch a little television and then do some hair styling. Cassie's hair was really fun to do. She was such a helper getting the rollers together.

After we finished with her hair we ran a couple of errands and were lucky enough to find some blackberries ripe, right next to one of the parking lots that we passed through. We picked just enough for a small snack.

When Alice came to pick up Miss Cassie, she could hardly recognize her. Her hair was so bouncy and fun.
Mysterious Egg

Cassie and I were watering the plants in the yard this morning when we saw this amazing egg in the yard. But much to our surprise it turned out to be a mushroom. So....we thought that we could have some fun with the mushroom and the surrounding plants.

Cassie was wondering if this was one of those mushroom like in the story of Alice in Wonderland, that would let you grow larger and smaller depending upon which side of the mushroom that you nibbled from.

Cassie arranged the black-eyed susans around the "egg" for a really neat looking composition, she thought that it looked like the egg was in a nest of flowers.

We played around with PhotoShop and came up with these two composites. One with the flower and scrambled eggs in the background and the other with the lone egg in the middle of the all those scramble egg plants.

Tuesday

Last night as I was seeing Walter off, our neighbor was spraying his crepe myrtle bushes with liquid sevin to annihilate the Japanese beetle population on them - he was finished up and offered the remaining to me to work on the mass of beetles that had accumulated on the birch tree in the front yard. Of course, I took him up on the offer - this morning I've been out looking for the little carcasses. I haven't found that many yet, but I am anticipating hundreds within the next day or two. I wouldn't even mind needing to rake them up - it will just mean that they are not going to reproduce more for next year.

Sean stayed from camp today - he had a really upset stomach. It seems like it is beginning to improve. I do believe for he continues to progress at this rate he'll be back at camp tomorrow. As you can see he really has improved! Here he is practicing his fire escape plan. I don't think he'll have any trouble making it out if it were necessary.

As for other than watching for the destruction of the beetle population, I have started painting the porta-crib a lovely amaryllis white. I have the first coat applied and hope to get the second on a bit later this afternoon.

I did a bit of plant shuffling on the deck and I have it possible to completely hide the "great gray thing" from site of the kitchen window by moving the planter of herbs in that direction. I also moved one of the pots of petunias so it helps to block it from view from the family room.

I finished up work on the crib this afternoon and I do believe that it turned out nicely. It is all decked out with the baby quilt that I made before Walter was born, so now it has all of the children's and grandchild's name embroidered on it with their dates of birth. Someday it may just have great-grandchildren's names as well.

We headed out this evening to pick up items for Sean to wear at camp tomorrow for their "Blast From the Past" Day. He has a 70's shirt and pants. I do believe that he'll look quite snazzy. Perhaps he'll let me get a photo of him before he leaves in the morning.

Monday

I went out for a little while this morning and came home and began water some of the transplanted plants and filling up the birdbaths when I came across the newest planting by our neighbors - a satellite dish!

I've been trying my best to screen our yards using the crepe myrtle, japanese bamboo and hopefully wishing for a privacy fence so that the dog won't bark everytime we go on the deck. But now, we get to enjoy the view of the gray round wonder every time we look out the window or door.
Thanks to Dean for getting some new beetle bags, I replaced the old one and the beetles are on the move to that area once again. How much long must we endure these stinking Japanese Beetles? I know I read somewhere that we need to put something down in August to kill next year's population. I really need to find that again.

As I was putting water in the second bird bath, I was able to snap these shots of a couple of bees on the butterfly bush! I wasn't sure if the butterfly bush was even going to come out this year - it looked so sad, so with a good pruning, it really perked up. Now to see how many butterflys and others come to visit. I know that if the neighbors were looking out their windows that would wonder what I was up to, hopping around in the flower beds and "picking beetles" instead of flowers.

Sean came home from camp today, having had a fantastic day. He is working on gathering together the necessary pieces to put together a costume for retro day at camp. What a neat idea! He is looking forward to participating in this activity.

Walter dropped by this evening and dropped off some green beans from Mom & Dad's house. He also let me know how wonderful it was to come home from work to have his dinner ready in the crockpot. He was off to help his sister out with some tutoring.

My niece is coming over to visit with me on Wednesday - we are going to have a "girls day". Doing manicures, pedicures and hairdos.

A New Week

This morning we had a wonderful drama presentation entitled "By the Will of God", at church presented by the Academy of Arts, of South Carolina. It was a wonderful presentation and interesting presentation on the on the life of the Apostle Paul.

The fellows this afternoon managed to get tickets to see "Pirates of the Caribbean, Dead Man's Chest". It turned out to be a fairly good movie, but wow what a line to get into the theater. On of the other movie patrons told me that when they purchased their tickets, earlier in the day, that they should get to movie at least an hour early. It was a long wait, but seats weren't difficult to get once in the theater.

Birthday Get Together

Hard to believe that I started out as such a small little kid, WOW, Look how much I've changed!

Granny's card really tickled Walter, as well as everyone else. Who would have thought that Granny would be trying to burn a CD - it was so hot that it burned right through the card.

Alice is busy on the computer, working on a graphic for brother. This time I believe that it is a pirate of some type. She is quite intent on what she is doing as usual.

Dad was watching as the Walt opened his cards and gifts.

Dean & Granny joined the crowd as Walter is opening cards and getting a few laughs from them. I think that he enjoyed being the center of attention this year.

I made lasagna from scratch for the first time in many, many years at the request of our birthday fellow. Instead of a cake - cheesecake was served as the "cake" of choice also at his request. We had quite a crowd to help celebrate. Almost the entire family was here to help celebrate the passing of another year. We were only missing Danielle & her family. Of course Mom was snapping some shots, but even little Sam was taking photos.

Tim & Elda finally pose for a photo. It is almost an impossible to get Tim in a picture without him doing something silly, like sticking his tongue out or screwing up his face in some other odd way.

Before all the family departed the kids all played hide-and-seek out in the yard and looked like they were having a great time running around the yard. They were hiding in the shrubbery and behind vehicles and even the tool shed. Walter gave Terry helicopter rides, and Terry spent a good bit of time knocking on the car doors letting everyone know that he was ready to leave.

Both Alice's & Tim's kids took home some black-eyed susan plants to put into their yards, or at least in a pot. They all have so much fun picking them, because no one fusses at them since they are just wildflowers anyway.

After Pappaw had taken Terry for a ride around the circle, Terry took the notion that it was time for him to get into his car and head out for home.

Terry just loves to pretend to drive around. He seems to know exactly what all the buttons and gadgets are for....

Oh no, looks like Walter is going to be riding shotgun for Terry.

Busy Bees

Happy Birthday Walter

For our very own "Brawnyman"!
Hope that your birthday is full of fun and happiness.
Love from All.

Freaky Friday

They fellows got off to work and camp early this morning, I headed out the door shortly thereafter to do the dreaded grocery shopping, as it is not my favorite activity. I did manage to make it back into the house by 9:30 with the bulk of the groceries, but had to get with Mom to head off to Costco. I needed to get that specially request "cake" for the birthday boy. We were finished up with Costco and a couple of other errands around noon. I still need to finish putting the nonperishable groceries away and get started on figuring out the seating arrangement for Saturdays dinner. At least I have tonight's dinner figured out already.

Sean came home from camp with Music and Drama button for doing a good job a acting in his part. Now he can add this to his backpack button collection.

This evening we headed out to Commonwealth 20 to see Pirates of the Caribbean, but...by the time we got there all the shows were sold out until the 10:30 showings. No way we were going to leave out at that time to see a movie so we saw Superman Returns instead. Not too bad, not terrific either. You had to watch it knowing that they were trying to bridge a number of years and introduce another actor as Superman.

Thursday

Looks like we are going to have the wet stuff all day long. It could get really messy. The rain finally slacked up and off this afternoon. Perhaps it will stay away for tomorrows session of camp. That would be a great way to end the week at camp, dry and not too hot.

Alice called this morning to let me know that since Sean was an alumni of Alberta Smith, she thought that we would be interested in knowing that it had been broken into last night and apparently there had been quite a bit of damage done to the school and or equipment. It was bad enough that they moved their summer school classes to the local middle school. I haven't heard anything on the news as of yet, but I truly hope that they are able to catch the vandals/thieves that are involved quickly. -- As of this afternoon there has been no information regarding what exactly happened at the school. I''ll pass along updates as they become available.

Received this via email from one of my close friends. It does make a point.

I went down this morning to visit with Miss Faith & her mommy. Faith & I certainly had a fine old time. She really enjoyed trying to grab hold of the camera while I was taking her picture. Danielle then gave her a stuffed kitty to play with, it seems to be one of her favorite toys. She was even biting on it's nose and paws. I do hope her new teeth do come in soon. After playing around on the floor for awhile she hung out in her walker for a bit and found much of what I had to say funny. Her lunch time rolled around and I was able to feed her. She had a nice big lunch of rice and stained peas. She really did enjoy those peas. She was also drinking apple juice from a sippy cup. She would get a bit fussy when her Danielle came into the room, but I think that was all about her being sleepy and ready to for her mommy to topped off so she could get sleep.

Wednesday

Sean starts back to camp this morning. It is a bit overcast and he may need that rain poncho before the day is out.

Marion and Kimi came by this afternoon for some assistance with Kimi's summer research project. She is working on doing her family genealogy to have ready for the fall. We had a wonderful visit. We even got into the old letters and correspondence that belonged to Elda's grandparents. Kimi even emailed her teacher to see if he wanted to work with them in a larger project. So we will see. Who knows, what will become of the project? I told Elda about the possible project with the letters, she seemed slightly excited about the possibility of something actually getting done with them.

Found this interesting picture on Danielle & Ben's Blog this evening. She had been working on this on Independence Day and it just turned up on their site. So Faith's acrobatic fete for the da wa to show us all just how adorably that she could show off her ability to munch on her own toes!

That storm that I was worried about is beginning to move into the area this afternoon. It will probably arrive about the same time as Dean and Sean. Since we are heading out for a bit this evening, looks like pizza is the dinner of choice tonight.

Celebrate!! & Remember

CELEBRATE

"It ought to be commemorated, as the Day of Deliverance by solemn Acts of Devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, guns, Bells, Bonfires and Illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forever more." —John Adams

This evening we are headed out to watch the fireworks with the Patnaudes, at our usual spot. We've been doing this for a number of years. We get a spot on the beach and lined right up where we can see the fireworks over the water. It gives us a great opportunity to catch up and have an enjoyable visit with one another. I hope that the rest of the family will be able to join us, but with Faith being so young and the fireworks beginning so late I doubt that they will be able to make it. As for Walt, he has probably been up early working and will need to get his rest for tomorrow.

Dean stayed with the chairs to stake out our space. While waiting for the Patnaude's to catch up with us. We weren't sure there for a while if the thunderstorm was going to "rain" out the fireworks, but it skimmed around our location. It did bring in a much needed cooling down.

While Dean hung out with the chairs I went off in search of something/someone to take photos of. Much to my delight I ran across a mother duck with her three ducklings.

After much adjusting and changing of position, I was able to get this one shot of the four of them together and the second close up of two of the ducklings. They looks so soft and fluffy.

Then there was Sean the masterful fisherman. He was all over the dock. Using just a fishing line, hook and bread for bait he kept pulling in these small fish. He was on the catch and release program. I believe that he impressed several of the people on the dock with the fact that he was able to even catch anything with his limited supplies.

Marion & Dale with the girls in tow arrived about 45 minutes before the big show, which gave us the opportunity to catch up with all the goings on of the past few months. So much to catch up on and so little time.

The fireworks started promptly at 9 pm, we had several new variations which we gave names such as the butterfly (it had the appearance of white wings with a red body), chicken feet (this is one of Marion's favorites - it actually looked like chicken tracks), then there were the curly cues (imagine white sprial fries raining down); there was one new one which used several colors that aren't normally put together. It was quite festive. The finale was terrific as always. So end the ninth year of our viewing fireworks together. Next year we'll have to make them a bit more special.

REMEMBER

"The day of our nation's birth in that little hall in Philadelphia, [was] a day on which debate had raged for hours. The men gathered there were honorable men hard-pressed by a king who had flouted the very laws they were willing to obey. Even so, to sign the Declaration of Independence was such an irretrievable act that the walls resounded with the words 'treason, the gallows, the headsman's axe,' and the issue remained in doubt. [On that day] 56 men, a little band so unique we have never seen their like since, had pledged their lives, their fortunes and their sacred honor. Some gave their lives in the war that followed, most gave their fortunes, and all preserved their sacred honor... In recent years, however, I've come to think of that day as more than just the birthday of a nation. It also commemorates the only true philosophical revolution in all history. Oh, there have been revolutions before and since ours. But those revolutions simply exchanged one set of rules for another. Ours was a revolution that changed the very concept of government. Let the Fourth of July always be a reminder that here in this land, for the first time, it was decided that man is born with certain God-given rights; that government is only a convenience created and managed by the people, with no powers of its own except those voluntarily granted to it by the people. We sometimes forget that great truth, and we never should." —Ronald Reagan [PatriotPost July 3, 2006 Patriot No. 06-27]

Monday

Dean is working on the spare room again today. I look forward to seeing his progress; Here he is finishing up the first coat of Kilz on the walls and ceiling.

I do hope that one of them will get the weedeater strung so that either they or I can get the get the yard trimmed out to go with the cut lawn.

My project for the day has been napping. I slept late and still am thinking about another nap. I might try to catch another 40 winks before beginning work on dinner.

Walter came over at lunch time and visited for awhile and then spent some time surfing the net. He and Dad are coming over to dinner tonight. It will be nice to have a full table again.

We had a wonderful time together this evening. We started watching Annapolis and had dinner. Dad had been at the garden and been working on green beans, he even brought us a enough for a meal and two tomatoes. Great company and a very pleasant evening.

Dad went back home and canned 24 quarts of green beans. It was a great surprise for Mom.

Sunday Activities

We had a wonderful church service this morning, full of patriotic music and awesome preaching, Dr. Fowler did a great job. After services we headed out for a church picnic. The food and fellowship was equally as enjoyable. Sean is standing in line here for a snowcone, as it was close to 90+ outside, he and everyone else seemed to need one.

I didn't get to see Danielle or Miss Faith at church today, as Danielle had let me know earlier that Faith was running a small fever and they did not want to share that with the rest of the children in the nursery - that was the same policy that we had when all of ours were little as well.

This afternoon Dean is setting to work on the spare room to get it ready for painting and set up as an exercise/computer/library. The holes are all just about patched and sanded now to get to the real job of painting.

With no choir practice this evening, since we are having guest singers next week, depending on how far along Dean gets with the room, I may pop in and get started on the woodworks for them, that is if they want my help.

Well, the spare room has been put on hold for a bit. Walter called and Dean headed out to help him with an automobile problem. It's pretty cool that they are working together on any project. They put on a couple of belts and put in spark plugs.

Saturday On the Go

I had choir practice this morning to go over our music for the Patriotic services at church tomorrow. Dean & Sean headed out to Louise's to help get her new tredmill all coordinated. After I got home, since the boys weren't home and no messages were on the phone, I hopped outside on the mower and mowed the yard. Now I'm working on the laundry. I may be ambitious and get a few more things done before they get back in from doing errands.

This morning I watched as a bunch of squirrels were hanging out and eating corn, peanuts and sunflower seeds. Then there was the female cardinal who was lurking around in the background looking for her favorite type of seed. There were other birds around - a few mourning doves and a huge blue jay. I think that I even saw a yellow finch.

I don't know the type of birds that these are but the mother & father were following around the baby bird. They were making all kinds of noise. It almost sounded like they were giving it instructions as to what he was suppose to do in looking for food and such. I saw them doing this same routine later in the evening.

I filled up the bird baths and I do believe that the birds and the squirrels were much happier with me, since I hadn't done it since yesterday evening. I do so enjoy watching all the visitors to the yard.

We've had a Will Smith afternoon, we started out watching Independence Day, followed by I-Robot.

The guys began working on playing Asheron's Call and installing some sort of add-in for it. That in and of itself has taken quite a while. I hope that they are able to get it working before they both get frustrated.

Then things went a little weird I watched Robinhood, followed by Terminator II.

While waiting for dinner to cook I sat out on the deck and listened to the wonderful songs being sung by the yellow finch in our neighbors tree.

I used the zoom on the camera to capture these images and even tried to use the binoculars to zoom in further. That is going to take some practice. No luck this time, but....maybe next time.

Welcome Summer

Easy safety tips, but if you kill all the bees then we won't have any honey to sweeten things.
