Sean had an interesting encounter at the pond in the neighborhood this evening. He brought home leeches! Now having been fishing and around the water these were some critters that I had never encountered.
So we dashed off an email to the family's resident biologist and he gave us this wonderful reply..."Leeches are not uncommon throughout most of the country, although most people never encounter them. Most of the one's you'd see in VA are going to be found in small ponds, swamps, and slow moving streams particularly in areas east of the mountains. There's nothing to worry about. As an aside... leeches are very popular fishing bait in Wisconsin and Minnesota!""Well that settles it anyone in the family that is going fishing in Wisconsin or Minnesota let me know and we'll get Sean to show you where to find those slimy things.
