Excursion to Jamestown

Road Trip! Another spur of the moment decision led to a quick trip to Jamestown. We headed down and crossed over on the Jamestown Ferry. The gulls' antics were quite entertaining to watch while crossing over the James.

Once we arrived at the ferry landing at Jamestown, we decided that instead of going into the very rebuilt Jamestown, we would head down the road to the site of the original settlement.

On the way there we stopped off at the glassblowing demonstration. It would have been so much better if the either the glassblower or a guide would have given us a more detailed description of what was going on while the piece was being made.

The actual settlement site has changed so much since the last time that I was there. They have added a visitors center and lot quite a number of other informational plaques describing what would have been in the various areas. We got out and went down to where they were doing an archeological dig near the church. The site was beautiful. I was surprised to see that the church had glass windows behind the altar, that's not something that is normally seen. It was neat to see the monument and statue of John Smith close up instead of zoomed in on the camera.

There was a continuous breeze off the river the entire time we were there. One of the volunteers said that normally there is a chill in the air, but today it had gotten much warmer than usual and that the breeze was a nice relief.

With the exception of one truly rude young lady on the ferry the entire trip was spectacular. Great conversation and company. I may make this run again in the spring to see how the landscape changes. It could be a great place to get some interesting wildlife photos.
