Welcome to September

Today Tropical Storm Ernesto is making it's presence known. The rain is coming down accompanied by some gusty winds at times. According to the weather we are in for this all day and it will get worse as the day goes on. I checked the radar around 7:30 a.m. and the storm was centered near Greenville, NC that's 156 miles from here.

So, instead of heading off to the grocery store we are going to hole up in the house for the duration of this mess. It will keep everything from becoming soaked before we can get it between the store and car and house. Dean is going to utilize the day to do computer maintenance and I'm sure that when Sean gets up he will be working on attaining level 100. As for me I'll probably putter around the house doing the normal stuff that needs to be done, perhaps Carla may get another bath today (with her anti-itch shampoo) that will make her feel better. For now she is hunker down under my bed hiding from the storm. She is always so funny about storms and is always hiding from them.

I'm pretty sure that Walt won't be working today (outside job) and anyone who works in town is most likely wary of going in, since the downtown area near the river floods whenever the rain amounts exceed about 2 inches. It's all that concrete and all the run off runs "down hill".

Dean ran out this morning to fill up the car with gas and make sure we had gas for the generator, if needed. While he was gone, Walter stopped by to make sure that we didn't need anything done before the brunt of the storm hit. It was very sweet of him to come and check on us.

We had an incident with a dead tree this afternoon. The house behind our next door neighbor had a dead tree near the back of the their property and it fell in the high winds. It clipped the edge of our tool shed and knocked loose the corner of the building and a couple of shingles. It was a close call.

When the storm let up a little we ran out briefly to pick up a few things from the grocery store. It was a wet proposition. Rain on the way in and out of the store. But miraculously we made back into the house with all the groceries in one trip. While we were out we picked up a couple of movies to entertain ourselves with this evening:
  • The Shaggy Dog - Nicely done version.
  • RV - This one is a hoot!
We received these wonderful pictures in the mail today from Danielle, a copy of her senior portraits. Both of her portraits are spectacular. They are so her.

Sean made it out to skating this evening, the last session of the summer. Hope that he skates till he drops. It will be a nice way for him to end the summer out with some of his friends.

A GREAT IDEA - The program is this:

On Sunday, September 11th, 2006, an American flag should be displayed outside every home, apartment, office, and store in the United States. Every individual should make it their duty to display an American flag on this fifth anniversary of our country's worst tragedy. We do this in honor of those who lost their lives on 9/11, their families, friends and loved ones who continue to endure the pain, and those who today are fighting at home and abroad to preserve our cherished freedoms. In the days, weeks and months following 9/11, our country was bathed in American flags as citizens mourned the incredible losses and stood shoulder-to-shoulder against terrorism. Sadly, those flags have all but disappeared. Our patriotism pulled us through some tough times and it shouldn't take another attack to galvanize us in solidarity. Our American flag is the fabric of our country and together we can prevail over terrorism of all kinds.

Ramblings of a Retired Mind Some Thoughts

I was thinking about how a status symbol of today is those cell phones that everyone has clipped onto their belt or purse. I can't afford one. So, I'm wearing my garage door opener.

I was thinking that women should put pictures of missing husbands on beer cans!

I have gotten that dreaded furniture disease. That's when your chest is falling into your drawers!

I know, when people see a cat's litter box, they always say, "Oh, have you got a cat?" Just once I want to say, "No, it's for company!"

Employment application blanks always ask 'who is to be notified in case of an emergency.' I think you should write, "A Good Doctor!"

Why do they put pictures of criminals up in the Post Office? What are we supposed to do -- write to these men? Why don't they just put their pictures on the postage stamps so the mailmen could look for them while they deliver the mail? Or better yet, arrest them while they are taking their pictures!

I was thinking about how people seem to read the Bible a whole lot more as they get older. Then, it dawned on me, they were cramming for their finals. As for me, I'm just hoping God grades on the curve.
