The Queen is Coming

This morning on the way into work I watched as this heron landed in the front yard on the corner as I was sitting at the stop light at the corner of Jahnke & Buford Roads. It was really neat to watch. Not something you see everyday.

The Queen is coming to Virginia today. She will be visiting here in the capital at 3 p.m. today. The state government has been all a flutter with activity getting ready for the visit. Then there are those people who are already down at the capital waiting for her to arrive. It would interesting to see her, but I'm not that willing to wait out all day to see her. There will be a much better view from a television screen.

It was a hasty exit from work this evening, the only one with a key was ready to leave at 5:00 p.m. and she had to shoo three of out of the office. It was a bit extreme on the departure - I just closed up my computer and went on. I didn't even have the time to get it shut down. Thank goodnesss it has a functioning battery.

The temperatures certainly took a BIG dip today, plus rain has settled in. It looks like it is here to stay for the evening. The forecast for the weekend does appear to be better. I've turned up the heat in the house and have put on my houseshoes to keep my feet warm.

Sean will be coming over tomorrow night after he gets out of skating at 11 p.m. - we are planning to work on the screen porch over the weekend. Perhaps I'll get it finished on Saturday, Sunday at the latest. It will be nice to be able to sit outside without bugs and stuff falling on my head from above.

Charles Schultz Philosophy

The following is the philosophy of Charles Schultz, the creator of the "Peanuts" comic strip. You don't have to actually answer the questions. Just read straight through and you'll get the point.
  1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
  2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
  3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America Contest.
  4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
  5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
  6. Name the last decade's worth of World Series winners.
How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here's another quiz. See how you do on this one:
  1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
  2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
  3. Name five people who have taught you something whorthwhile.
  4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
  5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.
Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credientials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.
