Virginia Beach Trip

We got off to a great start this morning, after dropping by Dean & Sean's place to pick up his wave board and some ice. The trip down was uneventful.

We got in touch with Mom & Dad who had been down at the beach since Thursday. We used their spare parking pass for their hotel (bonus - not paying for parking) and even had use of the room to change clothes (bonus - no public restrooms). THANK YOU!

Once Sean and I got on the beach, he did a bit of wave jumping and then came out of the water to play in the sand.

Well, play isn't quite the right word...digging would be more like it. He dug this awesome hole. It was so deep that he hit water and at the bottom of his wet hole the tide was carving out a cavern at the base. Quite neat. After fooling around in the hole for quite some time he ended up burying his own self in it while standing up. About that time is when he had some lunch - all that was poking out of the hole was his arms, shoulders and head. Just what he needed to use to eat lunch.

Sean used his talent for capturing sea creatures to catch about 30 of these little sand crabs. He was showing them to a bunch of younger kids on the beach who really were tickled to see them. I think he even shows a couple of them how to go about catching them at surfs edge.

After finally, I convinced Sean that we should get off the beach. I was concerned that he would be terribly sun burnt, having had to "fight" him to get any sunscreen on at all. We stopped by Mom & Dad's room, where we were able to change and get ready for our trip home.

We received a nice surprise, when they invited us to join them for dinner out at Frankie's a rib place on Virginia Beach Blvd. Terrific - it was on our way home and dinner was definitely on the agenda. They had planned to leave about an 1-2 after we had come up from the beach, so Sean and I took the time to do some shopping and sight seeing.

We started out hitting the souvenir shop, Sunsations, where Sean picked up him a t-shirt and hoodie to wear. The t-shirt made a great souvenir and the hoodie, well after all the sun sure helped to keep him warm. I got this shot of Sean sitting on a railing under the Neptune sculpture on the boardwalk.

Before well all headed out to dinner, Mom took a group shot of the whole clan: Mom, Dad, Barbara, Jimmy, John, Steve, Robin, Hunter, Clara, Sean & I. We'll find out how that turned out once they get back home.

The crowd all arrived at Frankie's and we settled in for baby back ribs, sides, and a complimentary cheesecake dessert. The manager had spoken to Aunt Barbara earlier in the day and treated us since the last time the group had been in town they couldn't locate the restaurant (it had closed briefly to relocate). The ribs were killer. Sean put away a whole rack and then was saying he wanted another rack for dessert.

We left out from the restaurant around 7:15 p.m. and started our journey home. Somehow I got into the wrong lane and started down the section of highway that enters the Naval base - BIG OOPS! But we were lucky when there was a light just prior to the gate where we were able to turn around and get back onto the right road to I-64 West. Once we were heading in the right direction, Sean took that opportunity to start getting comfortable. He got me to turn off the air conditioning just before we entered the Hampton Roads Tunnel and before I was halfway through he was asleep. So much for the conversation on the way home. He stayed out for quite a while, but at least I had found a good radio station to listen to.

We got back in right around 9:00 p.m. - I had taken the Pocahontas bridge back across the river (big toll - but it cut a whole lot of time off the trip) which was the most direct route, since I live right off Chippenham Parkway. When we head back down that way again, we'll use that route since it is so much faster.

Other miscellaneous beachy photos
These are some of the sculptures and other things that Sean and I saw as we enjoyed the afternoon.
